In Guadiana Valley lays the small Castro Marim just 4 km from Vila Real de Santo António. After the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the VIII century, the Mours rulled until 1242, and at this time has been conquered back by D. Paio Peres Correia, Master of the Ordem de Santiago.
Historicamente foi uma região importante para proteger a costa sul de Portugal – outrora a colina de Castro Marim era uma ilha longa que defendia a barra do Guadiana e dominava todo o estuário.
